funny- The U.S.

You're Virginia!

Part of the old school, you like both historical sites and crazy
amusement parks. You like saying the word Commonwealth but couldn't really explain the
concept or how it applies to your life. You like five-sided shapes, five-cent pieces,
and possibly anything else having to do with the number five. Every now and then, you
discard chaff from yourself that you just don't feel you need. And since you've been
wondering... yes, there is a Santa Claus.

Book #22
Book Title: Two for the Dough
Author: Janet Evanovich
Genre: mystery; thriller
# of pages: 312
My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best].: B+
Short description/summary of the book: (taken from amazon.com): Sassy, brassy Stephanie Plum, the bounty hunter from Trenton, N.J., introduced to acclaim in last year's One for the Money, returns to track a bond jumper through her blue-collar neighborhood known as the "burg." A local funeral home, a slimy undertaker and mutilated corpses figure large in the search for Kenny Mancuso, who, having shot an old high-school friend in the knee, posted bail with Stephanie's boss, her cousin, and then disappeared. When the old friend is shot again, fatally, Stephanie reluctantly joins forces with her sexy enemy and love interest, Trenton homicide cop Joe Morelli. While looking for Kenny, Stephanie also searches for 24 caskets stolen from Spiro Stiva, heir apparent of Stiva's Mortuary and also a high-school buddy of Kenny's. As body parts, cut from "clients" on view at Stiva's, are used to warn people off the case, Stephanie and Morelli spar in a lively if expected fashion and Stephanie's feisty gun-toting Grandma Mazur forsakes her usual routine of talk-show TV and attending wakes to join the fight against crime. Readers will likely stay a few steps ahead of the sleuths, but the sharp repartee and Stephanie's slightly cynical but still fond relationship with her family and the burg hold a treasury of urban-style charms.

My Thoughts: This is a funny funny series so far. I can't wait to see what adventures are ahead for Stephanie Plum. I am interested to see what also happens between her and Morelli.

book- Twilight
Book #21
Book Title: New Moon
Author: Stephanie Meyer
Genre: YA fiction; romance
# of pages: 563
My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best].: A
Short description/summary of the book: (taken from amazon.com): Recovered from the vampire attack that hospitalized her in the conclusion of Twilight (Little, Brown, 2005), Bella celebrates her birthday with her boyfriend Edward and his family, a unique clan of vampires that has sworn off human blood. But the celebration abruptly ends when the teen accidentally cuts her arm on broken glass. The sight and smell of her blood trickling away forces the Cullen family to retreat lest they be tempted to make a meal of her. After all is mended, Edward, realizing the danger that he and his family create for Bella, sees no option for her safety but to leave. Mourning his departure, she slips into a downward spiral of depression that penetrates and lingers over her every step. Vampire fans will appreciate the subsequently dour mood that permeates the novel, and it's not until Bella befriends Jacob, a sophomore from her school with a penchant for motorcycles, that both the pace and her disposition begin to take off. Their adventures are wild, dare-devilish, and teeter on the brink of romance, but memories of Edward pervade Bella's emotions, and soon their fun quickly morphs into danger, especially when she uncovers the true identities of Jacob and his pack of friends. Less streamlined than Twilight yet just as exciting, New Moon will more than feed the bloodthirsty hankerings of fans of the first volume and leave them breathless for the third.

My Thoughts: This is a great series! I think I liked the first book more, but this was a great read as well. I cannot wait to read Eclipse (which I just ordered). I heard that there is yet another book in the series that will be released sometime next year as well.

Book #20
Book Title: Dead until Dark
Author: Charlaine Harris
Genre: fiction
# of pages: 292
My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best].: C+
Short description/summary of the book: (taken from amazon.com): Having an affair with a vampire has one main benefit for Sookie. Her predilection for reading minds doesn't seem to work with him. But as is common with vampires, violence follows in his wake, and she becomes afraid that she might be more than just a spectator.

My Thoughts: I thought this was a decent read, not really great or terrible. I thought that the mystery of who the killer ending up being was interesting, but the whole Sookie/Bill thing was just a no-no. However, for some odd reason, I want to read the rest of the series.

Genre: YA fiction; romance

My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best].: A
Short description/summary of the book: (taken from amazon.com): "Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. 'Be very still,' he whispered, as if I wasn't already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat."
As Shakespeare knew, love burns high when thwarted by obstacles. In Twilight, an exquisite fantasy by Stephenie Meyer, readers discover a pair of lovers who are supremely star-crossed. Bella adores beautiful Edward, and he returns her love. But Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust she arouses in him, because--he's a vampire. At any moment, the intensity of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. But, Bella would rather be dead than part from Edward, so she risks her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the erotic tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste relationship.

My Thoughts: I REALLY liked this book! I cannot wait to read the other two that follow it. I want to know how Bella and Edward's relationship develops even further. I can't recommend this book enough!

Book #18
Book Title: Along Came a Spider
Author: James Patterson
Genre: fiction; mystery/thriller
# of pages: 449
My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best].: A
Short description/summary of the book: (taken from amazon.com): Alex Cross, a black Washington, D.C., police detective with a Ph.D. in psychology, and Jezzie Flanagan, a white motorcycling Secret Service agent, become lovers as they work together to apprehend a chilling psychopath who has kidnapped two children from a posh private school. The psychotic villain, who aspires to become more notorious than Lindbergh baby kidnapper Bruno Hauptmann, is effectively nightmarish. Atypical characters, sex, sometimes shocking violence, and several surprising plot twists are all attention-grabbing, while short chapters with a shifting viewpoint add brisk pacing and genuine suspense.

My Thoughts: Wow, it looks like this is going to be another Patterson series that I am going to be addicted to! The story and plot twist was great (even though I had figured part of it out beforehand.) If you like Patterson and/or great crime thrillers, then I'd DEFINITELY recommend this book!

MINNEAPOLIS - A freeway bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis collapsed Wednesday, sending many cars into the water.

Tons of concrete have collapsed and people are injured. Survivors are being carried up the riverbank.

The entire span of the 35W bridge collapsed about 6:05 p.m. where the freeway crosses the river near University Avenue.

Some people are stranded on parts of the bridge that aren't completely in the water.

A tractor-trailer is on fire at the collapse scene.
